Hard to believe – but it’s totally true! A well known online bingo room recently found themselves in a surreal situation where they were left trying to persuade one of their slot players to cash in his winnings of £4,444.
It’s believed this strange situation is the first instance of a winner refusing to take their winnings! The winner - of Chinese origin - was immediately overjoyed with his win, but soon after, became concerned that the figure won as ‘inauspicious and a portentous signifier of death’.
The winner contacted the customer services department, and explained the concern felt about the winning amount. Certainly the winner was keen not to lose out on the winnings but was – in the end – even keener to avoid any bad luck and refused to accept the cheque for their winnings.
As Chinese culture would have it, four – when spoken - is pronounced like the word death and is therefore considered a very unlucky number. They are still talking to the winner and establishing the best approach to handle this, which is sensitive to the player's concerns but also ensures he doesn’t lose out on his winnings. What you would do if you won 4,000? Not refuse it – that’s for certain, LOL.

This recipe for Sunshine Scones is a perfect teatime snack and should be served with preserves and butter. What could be more English than this? LOL.
Sunshine Scones recipe
Ingredients
2.5 cups all-purpose flour
1 TBSP baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 TBSP finely grated orange zest
2/3 cup milk
2 TBSP fresh squeezed orange juice
2 TBSP sanding sugar
Directions
Preheat your oven to 220°C.
Whisk sugar and zest together.
In separate bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in butter into teaspoon size pieces, add to flour mixture, and with pastry blender or two butter knives mix until it resembles fine meal.
Whisk in sugar mixture then stir in milk. Flour work surface, turn out dough and work quickly- knead only about 10 times (if you work the dough too much the biscuits will be tough). Roll to 3cm thickness and cut into circles with 1.5inch (4cm) circle cutter or shape into a large circle and cut into wedges.
Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with orange juice and sprinkle with the caster sugar. Bake about 12 minutes until golden brown on top. Serve warm.
