Giggle for the Day: How do you catch a unique bunny? Unique up on it! ROFL.
As with many other Christian dates, the celebration of Easter extends beyond the church. Since its origins, it has been a time of celebration and feasting. Many traditional Easter games and customs have developed, such as egg rolling, egg tapping, pace egging and egg decorating.
Today, Easter is commercially important, seeing wide sales of greeting cards and confectionery such as chocolate Easter eggs, marshmallow bunnies, peeps and jelly beans (yum!). Even many non-Christians celebrate these aspects of the holiday while eschewing the religious aspects. See below for some entertaining traditions that take place around the world.
We hope you have stocked up on those Easter goodies. Hop on into the rooms (get it? LOL) and play a few games with all your favourite Roomies!
So let’s settle in for a while and chat about what’s been happening and what’s on offer!

Wacky Bingo News
Weird Easter traditions from around the world
Its Easter weekend and Britain is stocking up on chocolate eggs and hot cross buns, but elsewhere in the world there are some extremely wacky traditions going on... Last week we covered the first five and here are numbers six – ten.
6. In Switzerland, villages turn their fountains into Easter Wells, using paper streamers, flowers and painted eggs to decorate them. The tradition takes place to celebrate the symbol of water, and its importance to the dry areas of the Alps.
7. In Germany, the tradition is to create an Easter fire out of used Christmas trees from the winter. The fire is seen as a symbol of the victory for the beautiful and sunny spring over the cold days of winter. Perhaps we should start this tradition in freezing Britain!
8. In Latvia, the traditional Easter game played by the children is similar to conkers – but with eggs. Players pair off and use hard-boiled coloured eggs joined together with string. Competitors bang the ends of the eggs together until one player's egg breaks. The winner is the player with the stronger egg. It sounds a bit messy to us.
9. The Easter bunny is the most popular symbol of Easter thanks to the Americans, but over in Australia they prefer to use their native marsupial, the Bilby. This is due to the fact that the rabbit has destroyed their land, crops and vegetation. No wonder they don't like the bunny!
10. Britain actually also has some unusual traditions of its own. At the Hocktide festival in Hungerford, the town's new police constable blows his horn to call all the men to the Hocktide Court in the town hall. Two men are then elected and parade through the streets giving women oranges in return for kisses. We wonder how they decide which men get to do that. |

Easter is a great time to gather friends and family together and enjoy the very best food and wines. Make Sunday lunch something special by mixing and matching our favourite Easter recipes. Here is an ideal Easter Sunday dessert - a simple twist on a classic.
Bun and butter pudding
Serves eight
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 50 minutes
Ingredients
300ml pot double cream
600ml milk
4 eggs
100g golden caster sugar
1½ tsp vanilla essence
8 hot cross buns
40g soft butter
100g marzipan, cubed
3 tbsp chunky marmalade
Icing sugar, for dusting
- Heat oven to 170°C/150°C fan/gas 3. Warm the cream and milk in a pan over a gentle heat. Whisk the eggs; sugar and vanilla together with a fork in a large bowl, and then gradually add the warm cream mixture.
- Halve the buns and spread with the butter. Arrange in a large shallow ovenproof dish (approx 25 x 32cm), dot with the marzipan and brush the marmalade on top.
- Pour over the cream mixture and set aside to soak for 15 minutes. Press the buns down into the custard mixture as they soften.
- Bake for 50 minutes until set, then remove and allow to stand for 10 minutes. Dust lightly with icing sugar and serve while still warm.
Make ahead
You can make this pud a day ahead. Warm it gently in the just-turned-off oven covered with foil, while you eat your Sunday roast.
Good luck! If you have any recipes that you would like to share with us, then why not drop us an email? If your recipe is published in the newsletter, then you will receive $10 bonus in BBz. |
