Giggle for the Day: What did the bartender say to the jumper cables when they walked into the bar? Ok you two don't start anything. LOL!

Well my New Year’s resolutions didn’t last very long, ROFL. Granted, I did shoot for the stars. So I am back to the drawing board, trying to come up with more achievable goals. It’s hard to not put down “Lose 40 pounds by May”, “Learn to ballroom dance”, “Save money for a vacation”...any suggestions? I would love to hear about your New Year’s resolutions. I hope playing more bingo is on that list!

Settle in for a while; let's chat away about what's been happening and what's on offer!

Bingo Mad Martha Hits 107

Even at 107, Martha Giblin still enjoys a weekly game of bingo at her local bingo club. To celebrate her latest birthday she was joined by her family at the Bingo club in Clough Road, Hull. To mark the special occasion, she had a table reserved and was presented a bunch of flowers by the club.

Going to bingo is definitely one of the ways of maintaining a healthy lifestyle as you get older. We regularly report how those aged more than 100 attend regular bingo sessions and it is no secret that bingo in itself keeps the mind active. Even for the younger generations, there is a wide variety of games, whether these be computer related, quizzes in papers and magazines or board games designed to train the mind, which is just as important as an active lifestyle. In fact getting out the house and keeping active is essential for those wanting to live an extended lifestyle, and what better way than by playing bingo with your friends. No doubt this has helped to keep Martha in such good shape.

Her daughter, Doreen Joyce, who herself is 85 years old commented: "We have been going to the bingo together for at least 15 years, usually on a Tuesday, and my mum loves it. Everyone is used to seeing her and comes up to talk to her.

"She particularly likes the caller, Gary, and calls him her boyfriend. He always makes a fuss of her."

Martha, known to her friends as Annie, was born in Barnsley Street, east Hull and has 222 members of her extended family – that’s enough to run her own busy bingo. The six generations include seven children, 34 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren, 89 great-great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-great-children.

As the oldest member of the family she was married at the age of 17 in 1921 and widowed in 1983. She also celebrated her birthday with her favourite tipple of brandy and lemonade and a family celebration at the home she shares with daughter Doreen.

Doreen added: "My mother is devoted to me – I can't even leave the room without her asking where I am. People say I'm the reason she is still here. My mother is losing her memory now but she still enjoys life, she is always laughing and smiling."

Martha intends to visit the Trades and Labour Club in Beverley Road, where she used to be a regular before suffering illness in September. She was in the headlines at the age of 103 as she flew over to Spain to see her great-great-grandchildren for the first time.

Joke of the Week
This joke came from a Roomie, richierich. Thanks for the giggle, enjoy!

Beer Jokes

After the Great Britain Beer Festival in London, all the brewery presidents decided to go out for a beer.

The guy from Corona sits down and says, "Hey Senor, I would like the world's best beer, a Corona." The bartender dusts off a bottle from the shelf and gives it to him.

The guy from Budweiser says, "I'd like the best beer in the world, give me 'The King Of Beers', a Budweiser." The bartender gives him one.

The guy from Coors says, "I'd like the only beer made with Rocky Mountain spring water, give me a Coors." He gets it.

The guy from Guinness sits down and says, "Give me a Coke." The bartender is a little taken aback, but gives him what he ordered.

The other brewery presidents look over at him and ask "Why aren't you drinking a Guinness?" and the Guinness president replies, "Well, I figured if you guys aren't drinking beer, neither would I."

Send in your Joke for the Week, and if your joke is chosen and published in the weekly newsletter, then you will receive an added £10 bonus in BBz. Laughter IS the best medicine, so let’s have a chuckle together.

Email me your jokes for next week’s newsletter. Thanks for all the jokes we’ve received. Keep ’em coming.

Receipe of the Week
These hot chocolate, chilli and cinnamon biscuits are pure bliss straight out of the oven.

Hot Chocolate Biscuits recipe

Ingredients
175 gram unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup (125 ml) caster sugar
1/3 cup (80 ml) brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg
1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla
2 cups (250 ml) flour
3 tablespoons (45 ml) cocoa
1 teaspoon (5 ml) ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) salt
1/8 teaspoon (1/2 ml) chilli powder or cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon (1/2 ml) ground black pepper, sieved
125 gram bittersweet chocolate, grated or finely chopped

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 150C.
  2. Cream the butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
  3. Add egg and vanilla and beat well. Add spices and mix thoroughly
  4. Combine flour into mixture. Mix to a dough.
  5. Lastly add chocolate and mix through the dough; at this point it will become a bit crumbly but keep mixing gently as it should become a ball of dough.
  6. Break dough in half and roll each into a log with a diameter of about 30 mm. Wrap separately in wax paper or foil and refrigerate for three hours.
  7. Line two baking trays with baking paper.
  8. Take one log out of fridge, unwrap and cut into 7 mm thick slices. Place on tray, spaced at least a 30 mm apart. Repeat with second log on to second tray.
  9. Bake 15 to 20 minutes until firm.
  10. Transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool - or eat them warm!
Good luck! If you have any recipes that you would like to share with us, then why not drop us an email? If your recipe is published in the newsletter, then you will receive £10 bonus in BBz.
