Bingo 'is an attractive form of online gambling for women'
Online gambling is said to have expanded by 40 per cent in 2009. A surge in the number of people visiting online gambling websites may be the result of a growing demand for bingo among women.
Brian Wright, business director at the Remote Gambling Association, was responding to a Nielsen study detailed in a report by the Times that suggested online gambling was more popular last year than social networking sites such as Facebook.
He says the numbers game and its strengthening fan base could easily be a major a contributing factor.
Mr Wright notes: "The number of female gamblers is going up, along with the internet rate. A lot of that is to do with platforms like bingo, which is quite attractive to females as a gambling platform."
Bingo can be considered not only a hobby but also a social activity, with many sites now offering the chance to interact with other players.
The study by Nielsen found the number of people using web-based betting platforms rose by 3.2 million in 2009, up by 40 per cent on the previous year.

OMG, I am still trying to digest that monstrous chocolate cake from last week. My hips will never be the same...ok; I have to confess that I ate more than one piece, LOL. So, I am going more low-key this week, otherwise we will never make it through the rest of the Birthday month.
These cupcakes are filled with fresh, juicy cherries and then topped with dark chocolate cream. Delicious! As cherries are not available, use glacéd cherries!
Choc Cherry Cupcakes
Serves: 10
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minute (may need 5 minutes extra)
Total time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
250g (9oz) cherries, pitted
150g (5oz) plain flour
2tbsp cocoa powder
2tsp baking powder
40g (1 1/2oz) caster sugar
1 large egg, beaten
125ml milk
50g butter, melted and slightly cooled
For the topping:
150g plain chocolate, broken into pieces
142ml double cream
Method:
Preheat the oven to 200°C/390°F/gas mark 6. Put 10 paper muffin cases into a muffin tray. Take 10 of the cherries and put to one side for decoration then roughly chop the rest.
Sift the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder into a large bowl. Stir in the sugar then gently toss the cherries into the flour mixture. In a separate bowl, mix together the egg, milk and melted butter.
Make a well in the centre of the dry mixture and pour in the egg mixture, quickly folding it into the flour. Don't over mix – it should look lumpy.
Divide the mixture between the muffin cases. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until the cupcakes have risen. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool (if the cupcakes have risen above the cases, slice off the tops – the gap will be filled with the chocolate icing).
Meanwhile, put the chocolate into a pan with the cream and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and beat until thick and smooth. When the cupcakes are cold, pour icing over each one so it reaches the top of the case. Decorate each one with a cherry.
